What Is Legacy Giving?
Legacy giving is a faithful act of Christian stewardship through which believers provide for the future ministry of the church by making charitable gifts during their lifetime or through their estate, ensuring that the Gospel is proclaimed and future generations are equipped to know and follow Jesus Christ. Legacy giving is more than financial/estate planning—it is an expression of Christian discipleship.
Particularly for our ECO Presbyterian congregation, the above definition also reflects the Reformed understanding that God is the owner of all things, we are His stewards, and our stewardship is part of our covenant responsibility to strengthen Christ’s Church from one generation to the next. Legacy gifts allow their faith and generosity to continue advancing Christ’s Kingdom for those who follow. They support the church’s long-term mission by strengthening ministries such as worship, discipleship, missions, outreach, leadership development, and facilities. Legacy gift help ensure that the Gospel continues to be proclaimed and that the church remains a faithful witness to Jesus Christ for years to come.
Why do we have a Legacy Giving Program?
A Biblical Perspective, An Enduring Call
Legacy giving reflects the biblical call to invest in God’s work beyond our lifetime. Scripture reminds us, “One generation shall commend your works to another” (Psalm 145:4, English Standard Version [ESV]) and teaches that “where your treasure is, there your heart will be also” (Matthew 6:21, ESV).
Our legacy giving program encourages biblical stewardship by helping members prayerfully consider how their resources and estates can honor God and support His work for generations to come.
It advances the mission God gave to the church. Legacy gifts help sustain future ministry, outreach, and discipleship, building on the generosity of those who came before us.
It provides financial stability. These gifts can support reserves, capital improvements, and long-term ministry needs while reducing pressure on annual budgets.
It creates a lasting spiritual legacy. Members of all financial means can align their estate plans with their faith and leave a lasting impact on the church and its community.
It builds trust and transparency. Clear guidelines for managing and using legacy gifts demonstrate responsible stewardship and strengthen confidence in church leadership.
It honors the past and prepares for the future. Legacy giving expresses gratitude for previous generations while helping ensure that the church’s mission continues for those who follow.
A legacy giving program reflects our commitment to being faithful stewards of today’s church while preparing for tomorrow’s ministry.
